What CLASSICAL GUITAR MAGAZINE said about Alberto Rojo's EPSA cd release titled "De Visita":
From the first few bars of the opening composition, PARITA one is immediately captivated by the beauty of the piece and this certainly whets the appetite for what is to come in the rest of the programme, a programme which certainly lives up to this initial standard.
Grade 6-7
Rojo’s music displays a vast range of emotions – from the melancholy and morose through to exhilaration and excitement. All three of these exquisite pieces in this album are taken from the "De Visita" CD. Titles are: PARITA, PUNTO APARTE and DE VISITA.

This very lyrical and emotional composition was named after the composer's eldest daughter and was written in its' original solo guitar form in 1995. Five years later Chris Dumigan decided to re-write it for guitar duet. Both versions are included in this edition. Shuko Shibata gave the first performance of the solo version in Manchester on 30th April, 1998 whilst the duet version was given its' premiere in Brighton in 2001 by Paul Gregory and Alison Parratt. Separate parts are supplied for both players in the duet version.

- Petite Suite Aleksandr Porfiryevich Borodin
This work, orginally written for the piano, consists of seven movements and has been arranged for other combinations of instruments in the past. However, this edition appears to be the first time this Borodin composition has been arranged for two guitars, a surprising fact in view of its very appealing eastern style of harmony work, very typical of Borodin at his best, and also because it fits almost untouched onto two guitars with very little actual arranging needing to be done. This extended work with its' beguiling melodies and wonderful harmonies should prove popular to any moderately advanced guitar duos seeking a new and refreshing concert item.

Paul Gregory writes: "At last! For all those classical guitarists who long to play the famous pop songs of the past - a worthy collection.
Suitable for any intermediate player to read through and take a trip down memory lane or for the more advanced to enjoy, perform or use as a basis for further improvisation ... Highly 'playable' polyphonic arrangements that are presented in an honest and reliable form.
The chosen keys allow the music to sound at its' very best on the classical guitar.""The arrangements are straight-forward, not over difficult, don't pander to the arranger's ego but just work to produce a lovely guitar version of these songs.

- Spring Songs for solo guitar
- These three pieces, dedicated to Eleftheria Kotzia, are in the form
of a suite and are based on three melodies by two Greek composers
Mikis Theodorakis and Nikos Antypas.
"Melodies by Mikis Theodorakis and Nikos Antypas are used here to produce a set of three pieces in a very accessible style requiring an upper grades technique. All three pieces share a similar episodic tendency, which may come from their origin as cadenzas in vocal settings of the songs. Tempo and meter change repeatedly and a fairly determined rhythmical drive would be required to keep them hanging together. Given such drive I am sure they would produce a very good effect. The last piece features some percussion on the instrument and an alternative ending should the player feel they want to share their singing as well as their playing." - Classical Guitar Magazine

- Niel Gow's Shadow
-
Scotland has some of the world's greatest melodies and this work will prove that beyond a doubt. My aim was to outline some of the stylistic motives allied to the work of one of Scotland's greatest musicians, the fiddler, Niel Gow (1727-1807).
In Niel Gow's Shadow, Niel Smith has fused together four Scottish tunes to make one single concert work. The first theme is an unnamed composition by Nathaniel Gow (Niel's father) which leads into the famous 'Ye Banks and Braes'. The third theme may have been used by Gow but exists in the Thomson Book under the title 'Goodnight and God Be With You'. The work ends with a rousing arrangement of 'Scots Wha Hae'.

Titles are: Mystery Waltz; Carnival Time; Song for a Gentle Maiden; Mountain Stream; Rush Hour; Circle's End; The Empty Attic; When the Cats Waltz at Midnight; The Haunted Carousel; The Seagull and The Rainbow(these last two pieces are currently in the syllabus of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama guitar examinations).
Circle's End was written in memory of the singer/songwriter Harry Chapin and the piece was chosen by one critic as his 'Pick of the Year' piece in Classical Guitar magazine after it was included in their music supplement.
"Among these programmatic musical pieces, which all require lower technical demands, we can see the composer's intent to present his more simple instructive and diadactic compositions. Each title is more-or-less bringing a limited number of guitaristic elements, usually on or two per piece such as: two-voice compositions, basses with the higher line melody; arpeggio used in a similar way; clear one-tone high melody lines with simple chord and bass accompanying material, etc. Suggested fingerings for both hands make the publication even more acceptable, and it certainly can be used to augment the general guitar instructive material for young players." - USA Soundboard Magazine

LMP059 - The Train Set
This is a descriptive major concert work of four movements, each movement connected with the steam train era, and lasting approximately 30 minutes in total.
CUZCO SANTA ANA 128This is a descriptive major concert work of four movements, each movement connected with the steam train era, and lasting approximately 30 minutes in total.
CUZCO SANTA ANA 128 is the opening movement. This composition tries to evoke the steam train journey which runs between Cuzco in Peru and Santa Ana in El Salvador, passing along the way the ruins of the magnificent Inca settlement of Macchu Picchu high up in the Andes. The number 128 refers to the number of one of the great German-built post-war engines which used to regularly travel this route.
MALLARD, the second movement, is one of the 'Pacific' class of locomotives and on July 3, 1938 it broke the speed record for a steam locomotive having reached 126 mph, a record it still holds. The Mallard is preserved and at the time of writing is kept in the York Railway Museum, England.
LEANDER is one of three preserved 'Jubilee' class locomotives built by the London, Midland and Scottish railway. The slow tempo and rather melancholic mood of this piece does not reflect the speed at which it was capable, instead it tries to convey the sadness at the demise of the ear when steam trains were once a part of our lives.
EVENING STAR, the final movement brings THE TRAIN SET to a magnificent conclusion in grand style. This piece, named after the last steam locomotive to be built by British Rail in 1960, is a work full of dramatic contrasts and is a definite audience-pleaser.
Although each movement could well stand on its' own in performance, the four movements should be played as a whole.

An Exempill of Tripla; the Golden Paven; So Prayiss Me and O Lusty May are four examples of the polyphonic tradition of Renaissance Scotland.
Such part-music was called Musick Fyne, and reached its' greatest heights in the deeply moving and virtuosic work of Robert Carver who died c.1568 at a time when the Calvinist Reformation was taking a stronghold of Scotland's spiritual and political life and sounding the death knell for polyphonic music. These pieces are slight in comparison to Carver's work, but are certainly worth hearing and performing. They can, if so desired, be successfully performed as a suite.

A newly 'discovered' work for flute and guitar
Somerset Suite op.106
Formerly known as Cannington Suite this newly-published work is based on Somerset folksongs, with some allusions to the Cannington Classical Guitar Summer School and the sounds of the guitar heard there. It has four movements:
1) John Barleycorn
2) The Keys of Heaven
3) O Sally My Dear
4) The Cheerful Arn"As with much of Duarte's work there are musical jokes and here he does not fail to include a musical guffaw. There is a simple beauty in the part writing for the flute and guitar from one of the foremost characters of the English guitar scene. In this peculiarly English setting, Duarte has created a series of settings that capture the calls of cuckoos, mysterious burial sites and the hunt, with a final departure fo the horns calling in the distance. - Frost Songs
-
The three songs in this collection were originally set for voice and guitar using three poems by Robert Frost as text: 1. STOPPING BY WOODS ON A SNOWY EVENING; 2. FIRE AND ICE; 3. BOND AND FREE.
Robert Frost is certainly one of America’s most beloved and important poets and his lyrical style and rhythmic phrasing have tempted many composers over the years to set his words to music.
Unfortunately, and unbeknownst to Brad Richter when he wrote these songs, the executors of the Robert Frost estate have disallowed the use of his poems for song lyrics, fearing, perhaps with good reason, that they might become overused.Though he was very disappointed to discover this, it led Brad to try the songs as a vocalise as well as with flute and violin and he was "excited and relieved" to find that the songs worked very well without words as set in this edition.

- Etudes Amicales
The two udes Amicales, or friendly studies, were written for two pairs of friends, and are spontaneous gestures of appreciation for their friendship and musicianship. Paris was composed in 1991 as a musical thank-you after spending a happy day in Paris with the dedicatees, guitarist and composer Erik Marchelie and his cellist friend Lucille Fauquet. In the style of a Parisian cafvalse, it uses the first three notes of my Concerto Franis for guitar, cello and orchestra, a run-through of which had been the reason for my visit to Paris the day before.
Having performed Paris several times, another distinguished guitarist/composer friend, Paul Gregory, and cellist Rachel Firmager suggested that the friendly study itself should have a friend in the form of a companion piece. So in 2003, inspired by their intense and romantic performance style, I composed the Argentinian-sounding Tango otique. - Paul Lewis. October 2003

"This is ideal music for any pairing of these instruments as it is tonal but not predictable, with just enough of the unusual about it to please players and audience alike. Great!"
